L’ilui Nishmas - Elevate the Neshamah
Who We Are
We are a group of Torah scholars in Israel dedicated to learning on behalf of others to help Elevate the Neshamah, the soul, of a loved one.
When someone you loved has died, you want to know that you have done everything you can to ease the transition from This World to the
Next, and to let them know how meaningful their presence was in your life. Perhaps you know about saying Kaddish, but find yourself
asking, “Is there something else I can do as well?” And the answer is “yes!” Though the body returns to dust, the neshamah, the soul, lives
on. In order to Elevate the Neshamah (L’ilui Nishmas), Jewish tradition has long held that the study of certain holy texts provides a
tremendous elevation and merit to the soul. Whether you have the background to learn these holy texts or not, we can help. We are
devoted to learning on behalf of others in order to help Elevate their Neshamah.
Mishnah Study
Rabbi Yosef Chaim of Baghdad
“One who has ‘damaged’ his soul, can repair it with the study of mishnayos. The letters of mishnah are the same
as “neshamah’, soul; [this is because the study of mishnayos] provides a correction for the soul.”(Ben Yehoyada, Sanhedrin 42a)
Rabbi Yechiel Michel haLevi Epstein
“The custom is to study mishnayos during both the twelve months following the loss of a relative and the day of
the yahrtzeit itself. This is a tremendous rectification for the soul, because mishnah contains the same letters
as neshamah, soul.”(Aruch haShulchan Y.D. 376:13)
Rabbi Moshe Reicher
“Studying the six orders of Mishnayos is a segulah for saving the soul from the need of reincarnation.”
(Sha’arei Yerushalayim, sha’ar 8)
Rabbi Yosef Shaul Nathonson
“The study of mishnayos is an even bigger merit [for the deceased] than leading [the congregation in] communal prayers.”
(Divrei Shaul – Yosef Da’as, Y.D. 376:7)
Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein
“My beloved grandchildren…you should learn mishnayos every day [ to elevate] his holy soul.”
(From a letter written after the passing of his son-in-law)
